In the end, the challenge for the PGA of America is to validate
the value that their Members bring to the table. The harsh
reality is that Owners and Boards, like most businesses, need
economic proof that they need to spend more for talent and
then be presented with a way to pay for it.
Fortunately, ever improving analytics provide an opportunity
to document the value of golf operations' staff. There is a
relatively new metric being used by investment analysts in light
of the recent implosion of streaming and other tech platforms
such as NetFlix, Meta, Coinbase and Spotify called " per user
revenue " . As some of these platforms lose subscribers, the only
chance to maintain value is the ability is to get more revenue
from the remaining - which ones have that potential will be
more likely to succeed. Wall Street Journal, " Block Assembled

Our research indicates that the increase in demand over the
last 2 years came more from existing golfers playing and spending
more than from new golfers. Our data also showed that new
2020 golfers that were retained in 2021 played and spent more.
The research also indicated that the younger new golfers were
more willing to seek instruction and clubfitting services. With
player retention and increasing engagement critical to golf's
sustained success; " per user revenue " is a great measurement for
us to look at.
The data to create " per user revenue " metrics exists for 1,000s
of golf courses using certain Tee Sheet/POS/Property Management
System platforms. Add in the PGA of America's role in
skill development and the positive impact it has on golfer engagement;
you have the basics for defining the value contributions
of PGA Members. In turn, these metrics will also document
revenue improvements which should lead to Boards' and
Owners'willingness to participate in performance based compensation
that benefit both the employees and the facilities.
