That was the second-best compliment I've gotten lately.
The first was from my daughter. During one of our Michigan
drives, she said " Dad, I finally understand all the 'stupid
stuff' you tried to teach me. " She knows how to replace divots,
repair ball marks and rake bunkers. She also said some of the
other golf education she got via osmosis has really helped her
and her friends enjoy the game more (including laughing at a
few golf specific expletives). Better yet, she understands that
those things are just another way of teaching the Golden Rule
- you do it because the golfers behind you are important too.
It's one of the great things golf can help teach about life.
Apparently, some of the Division 1 collegiate golfers our
club hosted at the recent Marquette University Invitational
haven't had my daughter's epiphany (or their coaches haven't
spent enough time teaching why the 3 Rs of replace, repair and
rake should be a life lesson beyond golf). We played behind
some of the teams during their practice round only to discover
trashed approaches with so many loose, un-replaced divots on
several holes that made those areas virtually unplayable.
Now, I don't expect that these " entitled, talented golfers "
understood that they were destroying 95 year old german bent
turf - let alone the fact that the damage will take 12 weeks to
