heal because the seed is no longer available. But at least some
of them were aware that they were playing a course that has
hosted a Walker Cup, a US Senior Amateur and the USGA
Mid-Am (and turned down consideration for the 1995 Ryder
Cup). They also played a course that many of us think is in the
best shape it has been since it became the first and only USGA
host without an inch of white paint (1988 US Senior Amateur)
and was named one of the 10 best-maintained golf courses in
the US by Golf Magazine in the early 1990s.
What's truly disturbing is the course deserved better than to
be treated like Rodney Dangerfield. But then again, these kids
probably have only streamed Caddyshack and are too young to
remember he got the role from the fame of his " I don't get no
respect schtick " . And, obviously, some of the coaches are not
spending enough time talking about the " stupid stuff " and are
not concerned that all the Milwaukee CC members and their
guests that play behind them will have to wait until next June
for the damage to fully heal. Heaven help us if this is representative
of the next generation of golfers.
Fortunately, I know that my daughter and her friends would
have behaved better. And I can guarantee that the Oakland
University team would have replaced their divots. The golf industry
rightly talks about the honesty and integrity that golf
can teach; but it needs to plant a bigger flag about consideration
- it's the biggest component of the Golden Rule and
something the kids I've played golf with respond to. To paraphrase
(without expletives) another famous comedian, Robin
Williams, in his well known golf monologue describing the
destination of each hole - " I'll put a little flat piece with a little
flag to give you !#$%&*^ hope " .
