The industry cheerleaders and " heads of state " haven't been hyping the
great season we've had because they have no visibility to it.
" State of the Industry " without these foundational figures and
collecting, augmenting (need the weather data in there) and
projecting a small sample to markets and national level requires
some number of participants (on your side) and is not kid stuff
(on our side). We're working our way there but I've gotta' say I
know what a salmon swimming upstream to spawn feels like...
To be fair, part of the blame also lies squarely on our tech
providers; I can guarantee you that the gas stations aren't submitting
their weekly figures by hand through some web portal
somewhere that they log into. Our initial GMRC subscribers
have done yeoman's work in agreeing to manually input their 3
data points monthly while we build the automated " muscle " to
relieve them of that burden and which has given them and us
this unique visibility into performance, good, bad and indifferent
for 2 seasons now. Stuart's headline article in this issue outlines
the progress we're making on that front as well as the next step
on the journey which will be taking monthly analysis down to
customer-level and figuring out the size of your customer base,
who's new/lost, what was the net effect of that churn, are you
retaining your most valuable customers and are you collecting
contact information that allows you to easily and efficiently talk
to important groups of customers based on their recent interactions
with your facility (huge step, some heavy lifting still to be
done on that). When we combine that with the GMRC volume/revenue
metrics, the historical and forecast weather impact
and local market analysis specific to your facility it's going to
bring tears to the eyes of the GasBuddy crowd, mark my words.
