For years we have pointed out that more " recreational daylight "
during the golf season leads to higher golf participation. Is it
coincidence that the northern 1/3rd of the US generally has
50% higher golf participation rates than the lower 2/3rd?
of the Presidential pen. That would result in an average revenue
gain of over $20,000 per course - most of which show flow directly
to the bottom line.
Some of you may notice that we have not adjusted for the
Public/Private mix of golf courses. I don't mean to contradict
Jimmy Buffett's assertion that " it's 5 O'Clock somewhere " ; but
Private courses also benefit from higher late in the day revenue
opportunities. More importantly, there may be an intangible
positive impact from making DST permanent.
For years we have pointed out that more " recreational daylight "

Is it coincidence that the northern 1/3rd of the US generally
has 50% higher golf participation rates than the lower 2/3rd?
Further to the north, Canada has even higher golf participation
rates; and Sweden has as many holes per capita as Wisconsin (#1
in the US). Is there a chance that moving a significant amount of
Golf Playable Hours to " recreational daylight " will raise participation
in the southern 2/3rds of the US? We would suggest that
permanent DST will improve the odds. It will take some time
for this to show up in our golf participation data; but it would
just add to the positive impact of the DST change.
Our final comment is to encourage golf course operators to
make sure to monitor course utilization for the later hours and
adjust pricing and timing for any twilight rates you may have.
For those using dynamic pricing, these variances should start to
show up in the algorythms as utilization moves. Making sure
your pricing is right will enable you to take advantage of the
additional potential created by a switch to permanent Daylight
Savings Time. For those of you with a political bent, you might
want to contact your congressional representatives in favor of the
legislation - you might just find your " lost shaker of salt " or enjoy
" a cheeseburger in paradise. "
