higher throughput than the national average both unadjusted
and weather-adjusted (they're just doing darn well).
In summary, lots of good fundamentals in the City by the
Bay (cue Tony Bennett). You'll also note in the map that the
metro has had its share of supply contraction (all the black
hexagons, most of them dreams of " drive to " golfers that would
flock out of the city for a weekend and 36+ holes of golf; didn't
really materialize). The biggest threat to the health of this golf
market is likely the state (convert public golf courses to homeless
shelters), the (well-meaning) environmentalists (remember
Sharp Park and the California Garter Snack and the Redlegged
Frog conflict?) and the steady population exodus to AZ
and TX (see previous references/causes). As Stuart outlines
in his story in this issue, there are significant barriers ahead
in expanding the supply of golf in most metro markets so the
legacy operators should be in a competitively-advantaged position
to drive rounds and generate higher revenue from that
dynamic for the next 3-5 years.
