mainly used for underwater applications. The different
types of batteries are tabulated in Table 2. The batteries
for subsea are usually more rugged, with a water-resistant enclosure (e.g., rated as IP68-dust resistant and
immersed in 1.5 m of water for a half hour) and connectors that can withstand the equivalent water pressure of
at least 3,000 m of seawater used in underwater vehicles,
i.e., remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous
underwater vehicles (AUVs). For marine applications, they
have higher charging and discharging current with smaller form factor and fewer requirements on the enclosure

design, connectors, and material as compared to batteries
used for underwater. In addition, the lead-acid batteries
used in marine applications can be quite heavy and
space-consuming.
However, there are few batteries that are not listed in
Table 2. For example, the lithium-ion battery for offshore
oil and gas designed by Siemens named BlueVault has
been used. BlueVault can be used for both electric propulsion and energy storage applications. Roll-Royce has
started to build marine batteries with application in the
Hurtigruten cruise ships project, which will involve
10-18 MWh of batteries leading to potential applications
on ferries, tugboats, and other
types of surface vessels.
