power and signal cables. The first phase regards the
ship's network setup, the operational check of breakers,
and the energization of the shore connection. After
these preliminary actions, the ship power is provided by
only one generator, and the SPS is ready to be synchronized with the external grid. Considering a classical
synchronous generator driven by a diesel prime mover,
the PMS realizes the synchronization by acting on both
the AVR and the speed regulator of the generator. When
the parallel conditions are achieved, the ship-to-shore
breaker closes and the PMS starts the load transfer
from the ship to the shore supply.
When the load transfer is completed, the PMS finally disconnects the diesel generator.

Distribution System and
Microgrid Interaction
The DMS is one of the key infrastructures for the proper operation
and management of modern ADNs,
and it is one of the enabling systems for the collaboration between
the DSO and microgrid operators.
Distribution management systems
are facing a significant change and
expansion of their control capabilities to assess the integration of distributed resources, which requires

improved functionalities and new information and communications technology infrastructures. The DMS will
need to process larger and larger amount of measurements from remote telemetered units installed along the
network feeders and active components. Data include
busbar voltage and power flows of the MV/LV substations and lines, together with weather stations measurements and circuit breakers status, which support
the application of smart management algorithms, i.e.,
state estimation, load and generation forecast, and voltvar optimization.
