efficient and environmentally friendly
urban transportation system. in the
most-preferred scenario, the charging
stations will be supplied from clean
and alternative energy sources. the
connectivity within and outside the
vehicle using information technology
is not only enhancing the safety features but also providing attractive
customer features that will attract
consumers toward electrified vehicles.
electric and hybrid options are not
only limited to passenger vehicles
but are also available in increasing
numbers in heavy-duty and offhighway vehicles as well as construction equipment. Many of these
vehicles, especially the construction
equipment, are characterized by
heavy transient loads, and an electrified powertrain provides load relief to
the engine during sudden torque
demands. in these operating conditions, the engine reaches the limits of
air-to-fuel ratio control, causing the
highest emissions outputs with a
conventional powertrain. electric
vehicles can meet the drive-cycle
needs of light commercial vehicles
such as package- or goods-delivery
vans with fixed urban routes. Public
utility vehicles can benefit from the

quiet operation in cities with zero or
lower emissions.
the largest growth in electric transportation in recent years is, however, in
electric two- or three-wheeled vehicles, including e-bikes, e-scooters, and
e-motorcycles, and it is happening in
parts of the world where those modes
of transportation are much more effective. the socioeconomic culture and
the nature of the urban environment is
ultimately going to dictate the type of
electrified vehicle suitable in a location,
but the electric vehicles are here to
stay, addressing environmental issues,
economic growth opportunities, and
safety concerns.
this issue-focused on electric and
hybrid vehicles-has seven feature
articles addressing connectivity, powertrain technologies, performance,
emissions, and economic analysis of
electrified vehicles. the authors of
these articles-from industry, academia, and national laboratories-are
experts in their fields and provide
great insight into the technologies, best
practices, and customer acceptance
issues. the titles of the articles are:
1) "connectivity and convergence"
2) "Propulsion System design of a
battery electric vehicle"

3) "improving Peak Power in electrified vehicles"
4) "novel and ruggedized Power
electronics for off-highway
vehicles"
5) "Gaining traction"
6) "Power conversion technologies
for automotive and aircraft
Systems"
7) "the reign of evs?"
while the first two issues of the
magazine in 2013 covered multiple
topics addressing various transportation and off-grid concerns, each of the
issues, beginning in 2014, focuses on a
particular topic. the March 2014 issue
focused on microgrids, while this
issue covers electric and hybrid vehicles. the next two issues of 2014, in
September and december, will cover
electric trains and electric planes,
respectively. we welcome authors to
submit articles for future issues on
the topics of microgrids, electric ships,
electric vehicles, electric trains, and
electric planes. contact the editor-inchief or any of the editors/coeditors if
you are interested in writing an article
for the magazine.
