equipment to ensure the safety of the
system. The experimentation activity
on the tramway of Naples took place in
2012 and lasted for about one year,
leading to successful results.
This article presents the characteristics of the system Tramwave and the
various interventions that were done in
the prototype to carry out the aforementioned testing activities.

The Tramwave System
Overview
Tramwave catenary-free is a power
supply system for railway vehicles such
as trams or light metro, working with a
contact line on the ground and allowing
space sharing with urban street traffic

made available to the vehicle through
contact line conditioning, which is energized only in correspondence of a segment located under the vehicle, while
the remaining part of the line is constantly free of electrical voltage. The
necessary condition to have traction
energy is the presence of the vehicle
above the segment that provides it.
Tramwave feeds vehicles with voltages up to 750 V in a continuous current. The operation of the vehicle with
the power supply from the ground is
not degraded, making it possible to
operate at maximum performance
without any limitation.
