existing overhead catenary, several
pieces of electrical and hydraulic
equipment were mounted onboard,
including the collection system and
the new pantograph underbody.
The collection system, including
the pantograph, was placed under the
car body of the tram, supported by the
bogie in its middle. It was equipped
with a dedicated hydraulic control
unit, which was interfaced with the
electrical equipment of the vehicle.

The different working conditions
were managed and controlled by the
TCMS of the vehicle, according to the
position of the sensor ("up" or "down").
More precisely, when the vehicle is
located above the line of contact, with
the consent of the driver, the pantograph system underbody goes down
until it makes physical contact with
the contact line. The electrical contact
is ensured by the attractive force of the
permanent magnets mounted inside
the magnetic shoe.
To avoid accidental interconnections of the overhead and the ground catenaries through
the tram, a logic interlocking is established in the control
system onboard. In case of contact with the overhead
catenary (by means of the pantograph mounted on the
roof), the control logic of the vehicle automatically forbids the command of getting down the Tramwave magnetic shoe. Conversely, when the contact is established
with the ground catenary, the command for raising the
pantograph on the roof is forbidden.

To operate with a ground contact line, some changes were
made to the original electrification of the vehicles, involving 1) the HV electrical system, 2) the low-voltage (LV)
electrical system, 3) the driving desk in the cab, and 4) the
control logic of the vehicle.
