devices, battery storage systems, and
water thermal storage systems were
installed. The generators and storage
elements are controlled by the building's EMS to optimize energy cost
(Figure 20). Also, this demonstration
building system can be separated
from the utility grid when problem
occurs on the grid system.
On the other hand, output fluctuations from the PV system on the grid
were absorbed by controlling the gas
engine. This means distributed generators in the customer side can provide
ancillary service to the utility, if its
generators have a good response to
the power flow fluctuations on the
grid system.
In addition to the demonstration
sites, collective research was conducted between Japanese and U.S. participants. Those topics are as follows:
1) Collective Research on Smart grid:
The effectiveness of smart grid
technology, which realizes the
advanced control including the
counter measure for the renewable power fluctuation, was
evaluated. Also, in this study, the
relationship between PV output
fluctuation and lead-acid battery
capacity was evaluated.
2) Distribution Generator Performance
Evaluation: The performance of
ten different types of PVs and two
generators as gas engines and
fuel cells were evaluated. PV

performance was compared to
the mega solar plant in Hokuto
City. For Japanese manufacturers
of gas engines and fuel cells, this
is the first chance to operate their
resources at a height of 1 mi.
3) Cybersecurity and Information
Technology (IT) System Study :
Cybersecurity was evaluated for
the introduced equipment in the
demonstration.
4) M o d e l i n g a n d S i mu l a t i o n :
Through this study, a end-use
model of the residential customer
was established by the data
obtained from survey of the
residents in the Los Alamos area.
This model is useful to evaluate

the effect of demand response or
automatic demand response.
5) Safety Technology Test Study: In
this study, the islanding detection
systems used in Japan and in the
United States were compared.
The proposed Japanese islanding
detection system is IEEE 1547.8
recommended technology.
Two entrusted companies were
charged with data management portions and research work coordination.

Conclusion
The first international smart grid
demonstration, which is the New Mexico
smart grid demonstration, was completed
in March 2015. This project was started in
