The Marine
Electrical Revolution:
Battery Power at Sea
By Marta Molinas and Antonello Monti

N 1839, MORITZ HERMANN VON JACOBI CONstructed and tested a 28-ft electric motor boat with a
1-kW electric motor powered by zinc-platinum battery cells that could run at 4 km/h for 1.8 h. In Berlin in 1886,
Werner von Siemens tested the Elektra, his first electrically powered vessel; it featured a 4.5-kW electric motor, could operate at
speeds of 14 km/h for 3 h, and was intended to be a water taxi.
Now, more than 170 years after von Jacobi's experiment, on the
verge of global climate change and stringent environmental regulations such as the Paris Protocol and the International Maritime Organization MARPOL Annex VI, we are witnessing the
return of an old, wonderful dream. In 2015, the MF Ampere, the
world's first fully electric battery-powered passenger and car
ferry, featuring two 450-KW electric motors and 1 MW-h lithium-ion battery and capable
of speeds up to 18 km/h, has

We open the issue with the
article "Battery-Powered Ships:
A Class Society Perspective,"
in which authors Øystein Alnes, Sverre Eriksen, and BjørnJohan Vartdal introduce the driving forces toward batterypowered ships. The article highlights the stricter emission
regulations to come, which are intended to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from shipping vessels. The
authors state that by the International Maritime Organization
