rapid growth of both
wind and solar
energy in the next
several decades.

well as the adoption of new grid
interfaces such as variable frequency
drives and digital power supplies. All
these evolutions have one thing in
common-power electronics. They all
need power electronics to connect to
the rest of the power system (Figure 1).
As a result, a high percentage of electricity will be generated, transmitted,
and consumed by power electronics
in the future power system.
The past decade has seen significant growth of wind and solar generation worldwide. According to the U.S.
Energy Information Administration (EIA) Annual Energy
Outlook (AEO) 2020, the wind power capacity in the United

States more than doubled, from 39.6
GW in 2010 to 107.4 GW in 2019.
Worldwide, wind generation tripled,
from 180.4 GW in 2010 to 604.1 GW in
2019. Solar generation has increased
significantly from 2010's 2.7 GW to
2019's 67.7 GW in the U.S. (25×), and
from 38.3 GW to 596.3 GW (15×)
worldwide during that same period of
time. Wind and solar generation supplied nearly 7.2 and 2.7%, respectively,
of U.S. electricity demand in 2019. The
EIA and many other organizations
have projected continued rapid
growth of both wind and solar energy in the next several
decades (Figure 2). Specifically, the EIA AEO 2020 projected
