business merits for the power distribution company. This
growing circumstance under existing regulatory mandates compels certain utilities to raise their electricity
rates. Higher rates make renewable energy more attractive and spur more rooftop solar installations, leading to
a downward spiral for utility companies. Meanwhile,
power distribution utilities would have to invest in and
leverage new solutions to overcome the existing operation's shortcomings, like the previously discussed protection and control schemes. Ironically, these scenarios,
which can provide clean energy to customers and allow
customers to participate in power supply strategies,
were presumably never analyzed as serious concerns by
electric utilities decades ago at the time of long-term
planning studies.

Opportunities for Expanding the Use of
Renewable Energy
Many countries are paving the way to maximizing the
use of renewable energy, particularly solar power, which
has a valuable role to play in providing clean and domestic energy at a competitive cost to local customers. Modern industrial societies that advocate clean energy also

require a continuous and reliable supply of energy, which
fuels their economies. In this regard, it is often perceived
that variable energy resources, like solar power, might not
provide what is needed to substantiate the role of clean
energy in the vibrant economies of a competitive world. It
is very clear to energy decision makers that the world's
transition to renewable and distributed energy resources
(DERs) will be dynamic, complex, unpredictable, and
fraught with risk.
It is among these shifting sands that energy decision
makers must plant their feet as they respond to the public
outcry for a cleaner environment. As countries reinvent a
modern, distributed, customer-oriented, and sustainable
power grid in a competitive and restructured energy environment, the paradigm shift could be portrayed as exciting times with extraordinary potential and significant
opportunities for launching remarkable innovations in
clean energy delivery and utilization. The engineering and
regulatory contributions to this evolution could bring
about a higher level of efficiency, flexibility, reliability,
security, resilience, open data and transparency, energy
independence, and coalitions for a cleaner world that can
prolong the human race.
