(issued as european regulation) is
important in all aspects. enTso-e
deliverables, such as network codes,
a ten-year network development plan,
and an r&D road map, pave the way
for a pan-european process to be followed, including consultation with
standardization bodies. it is important
to note that a strong cooperative relationship between Tsos and Dsos has
been put in place and will be strengthened in the future.
The second article, "organic Growth,"
looks at specific challenges for network
operators and illustrates some of the
measures taken to cope with these challenges. The challenges we are facing today require innovation all across europe,
and these activities should range from
network planning and operation to novel
technology integration into networks,
new market designs, improved asset

management techniques, and stronger
collaboration between parties in the entire energy sector. a significant amount
of effort has been already performed with
the european electricity Grid initiative
when developing the research and innovation road map. This road map details
the activities required to deliver the new
knowledge in line with supporting energy
policy orientations. The european union
r&D strategic research agenda 2035
focuses on technology-related research
that will be necessary for the further development of the electricity system from
2020 to 2035 and beyond.
The third article presents the project e-highway 2050, which develops
methods and tools to support the planning of electricity highway systems,
based on various future power system
scenarios, including options for a paneuropean grid architecture, taking into
account the benefits, costs, and risks

for each. The final results of the project are expected in 2015. This project
defines which transmission grid should
be developed in the perspective of a
decarbonized energy mix by 2050. The
project faces many challenges, starting with the definition of the scenarios
and modeling that should be applied to
power system simulations to the complex analysis to find the optimal grid
architecture that needs to bring socioeconomic benefits.
The fourth article explains the role of
r&D for both transmission and distribution network operators. it is important to
highlight that r&D activities performed
by network operators are not related to
technology developments but to system
development, optimization and assets,
system operation, market facilitation,
and system technology. The leadership
role in r&D by network operators is
paramount for the integration of new
