be integrated into a useful tool for electric grid operations challenges.
The sixth article focuses on large-scale
demonstration projects aimed at integrating renewable energy sources. projects

presented in the article are TWenTies,
BesTpaThs, and iGreenGrid. The
recently concluded TWenTies project
has demonstrated that europe's energy
infrastructure can be used much more
efficiently than it is currently. The outcome includes 1) a dc circuit breaker
prototype that was tested successfully and

2) the conclusion that by controlling flows
by means of phase shifting transformers,
high-voltage direct current, and flexible
alternating current transmission system,
local congestion can be alleviated in a flexible manner; many more relevant conclusions are documented in the project's final
report. The BesTpaThs project is based,
to some extent, on the experience gained in
the TWenTies and focuses on interoperability issues and interactions between
wind turbines and high-voltage dc converters. The iGreenGrid project evaluates
the performance of different solutions by
defining key performance indicators and
technical and economic analysis to study
the replicability and scalability and the
best practise method for the integration of
distributed energy resources into the grid.
The seventh article presents the
efforts of the Dsos in the GriD4eu
project, which is a large-scale demonstration project aimed at validating most
of the relevant smart grid technologies
in distribution networks. it emphasizes
the need to perform large-scale demonstration projects to work on one of the
most urgent issues-the integration of
distributed energy resources.
in conclusion, r&D is and will always be a way to find measures for
present or future challenges. There is no
failed r&D; all results have their value
and are cost-effective in longer periods
even if significant spending might be
necessary to perform endorsed research
programs. appropriate funding mechanisms together with innovative thinking
by the management of the network operators are necessary to enable resources and to ensure fulfilment of the r&D
road maps, which is a key aspect for
reaching political targets, dealing with
the challenges, and achieving socioeconomic benefits.
