providing energy users and others with information, time-based
prices, load aggregation mechanisms, consumer behavior models, and so on. The second is concerned with promoting energy
demand reduction and energy efficiency through interaction
with consumers and other energy infrastucture in the city or district. at the grid4eu project, several demonstrations deal with
these topics.
The spanish demonstration aims to model consumer
behavior by analyzing the capacity of the utility to modify
such behavior so as to promote "efficiency and the reduction
of consumption." In the first phase, customers will receive

real-time information about consumption in terms of energy
and accumulative costs through specific devices (via inhome displays, see Figure 2). In the second phase, tips (customer training) will be introduced to promote responsible
energy consumption. In the third phase, three different tariffs
will be applied to the customer in the course of each day
(with +30%, 0%, and -35% of price variation). Finally, in
the fourth phase, instantaneous notifications about real-time
price modifications will be sent to the customer to modify
short-term consumption.
In France, the goal is to relieve the electricity network
during peak consumption (6 p.m.-8 p.m.) for industrial and
residential clients implementing both voluntary and automatic consumption reduction. customers, who participate
voluntarily, are notified of their current consumption via
smart meters. during the first month of the tests, nearly 100
of the 130 residential customers participating have reacted
positively, using this information to produce a reduction of
around 400 W per client.
The implementation of the automatic power reduction relies
on the capability of the energy supplier to control customer water
heaters. during the summer, for example, if more solar power
is being generated than consumed, customers are offered "solar
bonuses" (solar off-peak hours, between noon and 4 p.m., in which
the cost of energy is lower), and the system remotely activates
the in-home electric water heaters and also stores the electricity
