The Columbia was in dry dock at the
Union Iron Works dock in San Francisco when the San Francisco earthquake
occurred on 18 April 1906. The ship
was knocked off its hull supports (see

Figure 5). This caused the ship to roll
to starboard and crash into the dry dock
with resulting severe damage to Columbia's iron hull and to the dock. Temporary repairs to the ship required two
months, and the vessel was then moved
to Hunter's Point for the completion

underwent a major overhaul, and new,
more advanced, lighting equipment
was installed. After the 1895 refit of
the Columbia was completed, the vessel
continued regular scheduled service between San Francisco and Portland until
its loss in July 1907.
When the four original dynamos
were removed during the overhaul, the
Oregon Railway and Navigation Company shipped two of them to the General
Electric Company. One of the dynamos
was presented to the Smithsonian Institution and placed in the electrical
collection at the National Museum of
American History. Figure 4 shows that
dynamo. The second original dynamo
was stored by General Electric in Schenectady, New York, for some years and
later presented to Henry Ford. Today it
resides in the reconstruction of Thomas Edison's Menlo Park machine shop
