As of early 2019, as many as 125 cities, 11 counties, and seven
states have committed to 100% clean energy goals within
(approximately) the next 20 years. These changes are not
specific to the United States alone; this a worldwide phenomenon. A few cities worldwide are claiming to have already
achieved their targets. All of this means that the amount of
energy from renewable sources reaching the grid is significant and will continue to increase.
The electric power system is changing in the following
ways (Figure 1):
✔ More and more energy comes from intermittent and
less predictable distributed sources of energy, resulting
in greater supply variability. It is also bringing new levels of complexity, changing power moving in one direction across the value chain (generation-transmission-
distribution-customer) to power that can now move in
all directions, blurring the categories of transmission

and distribution (T&D). At both the T&D levels, the
amount of energy supplied from renewable sources has
been steadily increasing, accompanied by an equally
steady decrease in energy supplied by centralized and
dispatchable generation sourced from generators driven
by fossil fuels, such as coal. The changing wind and
sun intensity and reduced use of fossil-fire generation
requires the system to provide ways to add or subtract
power very quickly to keep the ac frequency regulated
at 60 Hz. When these resources are distributed over
large areas, the system impacts tend to be smoothed.
However, they currently tend to develop in clusters in
the distribution grid, meaning that some feeders will
have many variable resources and others may have
none. Traditional grid management is increasingly in
need of ancillary services, including voltage regulation
and the ability to ramp power up and down quickly.
