a set of three R-22 class cars, all with
General electric Company electrical
equipment. Issues with battery voltage
regulation led to tests with similar cars
equipped with Westinghouse equipment.
It was found that the latter provided better regulation of control voltage, but that
General electric traction motors offered
superior performance in transition to
dynamic braking. The solution was the
selection of three cars with Westinghouse electric equipment (cars 7509,
7513, and 7516) but modified for the
duration of the project with trucks with
General electric traction motors. When
the final evaluation was completed on
the Sea Beach test track, the train was
moved to the 42nd Street Shuttle in
September 1961. Meanwhile, the wayside equipment had been delivered and

installed, and test operation commenced
by the end of September (see Figures 2
and 3).
The wayside equipment at the
Grand Central Terminal end was supplied by GRS. It included a new relay
room between Tracks 3 and 4 and the
control panel located in the dispatcher's
office on the platform between Tracks 1
and 3. The dispatching equipment was
used to operate the train on three different schedules from a perforated 35-mm
tape machine similar to those used to
control automated factory machine operation. A minimum-time station stop
timer determined the minimum interval
that the train would remain with the
doors open at the station.
In the event that the train was delayed, a schedule adjustment would be
