and Times Square, changing destination-sign lighting at the end of the trip,
changing headlights to red taillights,
and initiation of the starting sequence.
At the start of operation, both the dispatching and on-board control switches
were placed in the "AUTO" position. At
the designated departure time, the automatic train dispatcher would remove the
75 pulse/min door control code from two
10-ft (3-m) loops located under the lead
and trailing car receiver coils. The doors
would close and lock, the signal circuit
would be reversed, and the track stops
would be driven clear. A 270-pulse/min
code would be transmitted to the train's
receiver coils to initiate acceleration at
2.5 mi/h/s (4.0 km/h/s) until a maximum speed of 30 mi/h (48.3 km/h) was
attained, the speed being monitored by

a frequency-responsive axle generator.
Speed was regulated within ±1 mi/h
