networking, and remote control abilities in the grid requires
greater steps be taken to prevent cyberattacks. This subproject will demonstrate a standards-based end-to-end cybersecurity system that can detect when attacks are happening
and take appropriate countermeasures to stop them. This
system-level view of cybersecurity is needed to ensure vulnerabilities are minimized.

can be used to reduce system overloads and help regulate
voltage. These storage batteries will be used as resources
for the optimization algorithms as part of SP2-SP4. Information from these batteries will also be forwarded to the
DMS so grid operators will have visibility of the power
flow to and from the batteries.

SP8: Integration

SP10: Beyond the Meter

It is increasingly important that all applications work
together to share data and easily pass control messages
between them. This reduces the number of redundant interfaces that need to be implemented between applications and
allows integration of applications from multiple vendors.
SP8 is implementing an integration bus that all applications
connect to, allowing for easier sharing of information (Figure 5). This bus is based on industry standards and accommodates applications from multiple vendors.

Most new DERs will be located behind customer meters.
Many of these customer or third-party-owned DERs will be
managed by aggregators through the Internet. This subproject
will demonstrate the use of an IEEE 2030.5 communications
interface to exchange status and control messages with these
DERs by way of an aggregator Internet gateway. In addition, a
lab demonstration will be performed showing communications
to customer energy management systems for the coordination
of all resources (e.g., PVs, storage, electric vehicle charging,
loads) on the customer side of the meter.

SP9: Distributed Optimized Storage
Storage is increasingly becoming a requirement to operate
the electrical system with high penetration levels of variable generation resources. When the storage device is not
needed for grid reliability, it can be bid into the ISO wholesale market. This subproject will install and integrate stor-
