How PSERC Encourages
Collaboration Between
Industry and Academia
In the early days of Pserc, the org anization was simple because collabomarch/april 2017

ration was only among four universities and a relatively small number
of industry members. as Pserc grew,
for the organization to achieve collaboration, the structure had to become more complex. Pserc's structure, shown in Figure  5, promotes
collaboration by giving industry representatives and academics key leadership responsibilities.

The IaB is composed of one representative from each industry member
organization. The executive committee
has thirteen voting members who serve
as the site directors at each member university. The director has overall responsibility for the organization, but key decisions regarding research funding are
made cooperatively by the director, the
IaB, and the executive committee.

however, the content of its research
and education has evolved. Much of the
early motivation for Pserc was driven
by the emergence of markets, with the attendant questions of how markets could
function efficiently while maintaining
grid reliability. as markets matured, more
attention was placed on technology innovations and how they would shape the
future grid. smart grid technologies and
technologies enabling high penetration of
renewable energy sources are examples.
Pserc continued with three major
industry and university member meetings per year. Vijay Vittal and Dennis
ray were instrumental in planning and
conducting those meetings. The position of executive director was changed
to deputy director. Figure 4 depicts the
university and industry leadership attending an annual executive committee management retreat.
In 2015, Dennis ray announced that
he was retiring as deputy director of
Pserc and was recognized by industry
and university members for his contributions to Pserc. arizona state found a
replacement in anna rosa lampis, who
made a seamless transition into the position. Phase 3 of the nsF I/Ucrc ended
in February 2016, so Pserc continues on
now with industry funding, just as it was
initially after the Phase 2 I/Ucrc ended.
