the resiliency of the grid
putting the plans in place

R

Resilience has become a
major topic in our technology as a
result of catastrophic climate-related
events that have occurred recently,
resulting in major power system degradation. These events, causing power
loss for millions of customers and long
outage periods, have called out for the
need of making the grid more resilient
against the forces of nature that cause
them. This subject was on the minds
of the members of the IEEE Power
& Energy Magazine editorial board
at its 2014 meeting, and immediate
support was expressed when mani
Venkata and nikos hatziargyriou
proposed the subject for a 2015 issue.
This resulting issue contains six feature articles that provide a penetrating
look at the catastrophic events themselves as well as ensuing responses
and the plans either formulated or in
place to mitigate future events. mani
and nikos, in their guest editorial column, will delve into greater detail of
the subject and introduce the articles
to the readers. it is interesting to cite
the global aspect of the subject by noting the origin of the articles: three
from europe, one from Japan, and two
from the United states.
