band. These NICs form a mesh
network, which allows signals to
hop between them to reach their
ultimate destination and increases
the propagation range of the signal
in proportion to the number and
dispersion of integrated NIC streetlights. The integrated NICs are connected to a local access point (AP)
that transmits the metering and control signals for the streetlights over
a cellular wireless network back to
Silver Spring Networks' data center, where it is hosted on its cloudbased device management software,
Streetlight Vision. This setup (see
Figure 8) is used as the primary network setup for scaling up to thousands of devices.

Phase 1
Phase 1 of the smart streetlight pilot program began with the
installation of 15 networked and high-efficiency LED lights
(see Figure 5) at the IIT microgrid and the development a
software system, based on the OSIsoft PI, and the integration at the CSMART control room shown in Figure 6, which
allowed the project team to remotely monitor and control the
lights at the IIT microgrid.

LED Streetlight Mesh Network
The LED lights are networked (see Figure 7) with integrated
network interface cards (NICs) that communicate using wireless radios applying the DNP3 protocol on the 900-MHz ISM

Integration of the Streetlights with
the IIT Microgrid
The addition of smart city devices, such as intelligent streetlights, to IIT's microgrid required the development of a project plan, the coordination of four companies over months of
work, and the rigorous testing of energy and cost savings.
The CSMART project team worked heavily with engineers
from Silver Spring Networks to create the requirements for
a successful installation and determine what a "win" looked
like while they were developing a plan and timeline for the
successful integration of intelligent streetlights into IIT's
microgrid. There were two key pieces of the project:  1)
the successful communication between the many partners
