on its experiences with the two breakers, Con Edison placed the first substantial order for 138-kV SF6 breakers, and the rest is history. Following
the licensing of several manufacturers
and the expiration of the basic Westinghouse patent on the use of SF6 as an
interrupting medium, the entire industry has accepted SF6 as the basic design
choice for high-voltage, high-power circuit breakers.
