IEEE Power & Energy Magazine - May/June 2017 - 18

Der active and reactive power
control, and other techniques, can
further increase the ability of distribution networks to host Ders.
The trials were carried out in medium- and low-voltage networks
in six european countries.
✔ "The IDe4L Project," by repo,
Ponci, Della Giustina, alvarez,
Corchero Garcia, al-Jassim, amaris, and Kulmala, demonstrates the

effectiveness of advanced architectures that can be used in future
distribution networks. The authors
consider not only the active management of Ders and network devices but also the presence of aggregators and flexibility markets.
Laboratory tests and trials in three
european countries were involved.
✔ "Unlocking new sources of Flexibility," by Ballanti, Ochoa, Bailey,

and Cox, shows that the load response to small changes in voltages can be used, in the aggregate,
by distribution utilities to provide
significant flexibility services to
transmission. This innovative concept, demonstrated in dozens of
primary substations in the United
Kingdom, also shows the need for
regulatory changes if we are to see
provisions of such services.
✔ "achieving resilience at the Distribution Level," by Jiménez-estévez,
navarro-espinosa, Palma-Behnke,
Lanuzza, and Velázquez, shares
unique experiences gained from
small community-based microgrid
projects in Chile and mexico, demonstrating how resilient they can
be. This experience, which includes
community engagement, has been
translated into a methodology used
to design much larger microgrid
projects that will make two Chilean
towns resilient to natural disasters.
Finally, the "In my View" column, by
Graham ault, provides an expert view of
what is required for smart grids to become
business as usual. ault, as many of us, is
confident that the smart grid rollout journey will begin soon. however, aligned
with the discussions provided by the authors in this issue, there are several ingredients required to support the rollout. This
is a fantastic column that wraps up this
issue of iEEE Power & Energy magazine.

Special Thanks
When a single contact can bring down your
substation, installing precise fit cover-up is
the best choice for mitigating your risk.
It's a proven fact that cover-up works. Our
precise fit covers are made to order based
on the exacting dimensions of the underlying
equipment - it is the best product for
eliminating gaps. And, Greenjacket is fully
compliant with the IEEE 1656 Guide test
parameters. Selecting Greenjacket ensures
you have the only precise fit and most effective
protection available.
When outage risks can have significant
consequential damages for any utility or end
use customer, having the best protection is
your best choice.

I'm grateful to the University of melbourne, australia, and The University
of manchester, United Kingdom, where I
work. These institutions have been very
supportive of my volunteering activities
within the Ieee Power & energy society. a big thank you to the authors of
this issue, who have worked very hard
and have enthusiastically shared their
remarkable expertise. a particular thank
you to mike henderson, editor-in-chief of
iEEE Power & Energy magazine, who
provided me with the opportunity to
serve as guest editor of this issue and
kindly helped me through every step of
the process.
