simulating renewable power generation,
power system stability analysis, and asset condition monitoring. At the end,
the authors discuss three challenges, including data fusion and security, power
industry deregulation, and a high share
of renewable energy integration.
the U.s. power industry has been
battling the workforce crisis since the
early 2000s. today, the need for big data
analytics creates a surging demand for
energy data scientists, leading to a significant data analytics talent gap. As a
result, the power programs of the United
states are facing the challenge of bridging the gap with limited resources. Hong
et al., in the sixth article, "training energy data scientists," introduce the difficulties faced by the power industry when
competing with other industries for analytics talent. the authors present various

perspectives from government agencies,
industry organizations, and academic institutions. they propose several ideas to
revise the traditional power engineering
curriculum to produce the next generation of energy data scientists.
the issue concludes with an "in
My View" column by le Xie, founding chair of the newly established ieee
Power & energy society Big data Analytics subcommittee. He predicts that
"data and analytics technology" is going
to be the "new normal" for the power
industry. in addition to articulating how
big data analytics can be applied to the
power and energy field and bring value
to the power industry, Xie points out
three key issues: 1) setting up a regulatory framework for data ownership and
usage across organizational borders,
2) integrating data with the underlying
physical models, and 3) building synthetic data at a realistic scale to allow
for testing new algorithms and ideas. in
conclusion, Xie reviews the major activ-

ities of his subcommittee and calls for
volunteers to contribute to this emerging and exciting field.
