Ralph Samuel Gens
Ralph samuel Gens passed away on 3
January 2019. he was born in Germany
on 25 november 1924. he graduated
from Washington high school, Portland,
oregon, in 1942. After serving in the
u.s. Army Infantry from 1943 to 1946,
he received a B.s. degree in electrical engineering from oregon state College in
1949. In 1948, he joined the Bonneville
Power Administration (BPA) in Portland, oregon, as an engineering aide in
the Branch of system engineering and
served in various positions in that organization until 1974. he became chief of
the branch in 1966. his major activities
included insulation coordination, highvoltage practices, planning and economic
analyses, and research activities. In 1974,
Ralph became manager of Planning
and Research. he was appointed as assistant administrator of engineering and
Construction (chief engineer) for BPA in
1977, serving in that position until 1980,
when he retired.
Ralph was a giant in
the electric transmission
field, and he was internationally renowned for
his influence in the field
of high-voltage transmission. he held an active
patent, authored more
than 20 technical publications, and served on
several technical committees and professional
boards, tr ave lin g to
China, Russia, europe,
and beyond. these committees and positions included the u.s. Department of energy (Doe)
technical exchanges,
the u.s. vice president
and u.s. national advisor for CIGRe, chair
of the Doe energy Research Advisory
Board, and Papua new Guinea's electricity commissioner.
Recognition and honors that he received include the following: the Dis-

his retirement consulting activities
took him to the jungles of Papua new
Guinea as well as south America and
europe. At the request of his wife Ida,
they retired to Kona, hawaii, in 1987,
where he lived for 30 years. Ida passed
away in 1996. In 2001, Ralph married
Arlita smith, his companion and travel
mate for over 15 years, who passed away
in 2017. Ralph is survived by two children, five grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.

Herbert H. Woodson
herbert "herb" h. Woodson passed
away on 30 november 2018 in fort
Worth, texas, with his family at his
side. herb started his life in stamford,
texas, in April 1925. After graduating
from Lubbock high school in 1942,
he enlisted in the u.s. navy, where
he served in the Pacific during World
War II. After being honorably discharged
as an electronic technician's mate first
class in 1946, he enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIt)
in 1947. After receiving his B.s. and
M.s. degrees simultaneously in 1952
and then spending two years at the naval ordnance Laboratory, he returned
