to MIt in 1954 to pursue his doctorate.
he received his sc.D. degree in electrical
engineering and joined the MIt electrical engineering faculty in 1956.
herb moved his family to texas in
1971 to join the faculty of the university of texas (ut) at Austin as professor and chair of electrical engineering.
While at ut, he served as director of
the Center for energy studies and dean
of engineering before retiring in 1996.
During his distinguished career, he
authored multiple textbooks and registered several patents. Among his highest honors, he represented the united

states at the u.s.-u.s.s.R. Joint Commission on technological and scientific Cooperation in 1972.
herb was a member of the national
Academy of engineering. In 1970, he
was elevated to Ieee fellow "for contributions to teaching and research in the
areas of energy, conversion, electric machinery, and power systems technology."
he was the Ieee Pes president in 1978-
1979. In 1984, he was the recipient of the
Ieee nikola tesla Award "for contributions to power generation technology
particularly in superconducting generators and magnetohydrodynamic

generators." he received the national
society of Professional engineers engineer of the Year Award in 1990. In 1998,
he received the Ieee Lamme Medal
"for leadership in research and technology in the field of pulsed power and
energy conversion systems." herb made
great use of his retirement to focus on his
family, his love of golf, and his continued mentoring relationships.
herb was predeceased by Blanche
sears, his wife of 58 years, in 2009. he is
survived by his three sons, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

✔ "A subtransmission Metropolitan Power Grid" reports on the
emerging area of multiterminal
hVdc urban grids. these systems
reinforce ac subtransmission systems by strengthening their power-delivery capability. the grid
topology also provides the potential for increased operational
flexibility and resilience. the acto-dc line conversions, protection
algorithms, and dc circuit breakers described in the earlier articles
in this issue all come into play.
