recorders and solid-state recorders. Today, we are quickly approaching ubiquitous interval
load information, not just on the
whole facility but on a multitude
of elements surrounding a customer's every day existence.

Load Research
Manual
Partially in response to PURPA,
AEIC, with the support of the
U.S. Department of Energy and
Argonne National Laboratory,
began developing the first load
research manual (Figure 2). The
first edition of the manual, driven
by a team of industry professionals, was published in No vember 1980. Volume 1, Load
Research Procedures, included

an overview of load research procedures and a review of the PURPA requirements. Volume 2 was
Fundamentals of Implementing
Load Research Procedures, and
Volume 3, L oad Research
for Advanced Technologies,
also included solar, wind, and
cogeneration technologies.
Key contributors to this effort were Lois Brandenberg,
the head of load research for
Detroit Edison Company, and
Clarence Grund Jr., the head of
load research at Southern Company Services.
The second edition was updated in 2008 and compiled into
11 chapters that included sections on business applications of
load research, load research for
competitive market settlements,
and load research evaluation.

The third, and most recent,
edition was updated in 2017 by a
consortium of load research practitioners from DNV GL and included two
new chapters focused on the application of AMI data and the exploration
and presentation of load research data.

Workforce Development
Following the publication of the first edition of the manual, the Load Research
Committee launched an educational series built around it. The Fundamentals
of Load Research Workshop continues
