grid protection framework. Coordinated,
adaptive protection mechanisms ensure
safe and reliable operation on both sides
of the interconnection boundary. As an
emerging issue, microgrid protection research is getting significant attention with
a limited amount of field implementation experience.
To shed light on the microgrid protection topic from different angles, guest
editors Jim Reilly and Mani Venkata put
together a diverse set of articles written
by experts from universities, research
institutes, utilities, and engineering laboratories. These authors are steeped in protection design, microgrid modeling and
control, field implementation, and code
and standards development. They share
with us their knowledge on challenges
and solutions in microgrid protection,
field implementations and problems encountered, pathways leading from present
to future, as well as the ongoing evolution
of codes and standards.

engineering society efforts. These involve the U.S. Department of Energy
and include IEEE committees, working groups, and standards organizations. The collective effort of the parties
involved is crucial for advancing microgrid protection technology.
