Chapters 8-10 carefully outline, respectively,
different types of powersystem stabilizers (PSSs),
the basic concepts in tuning PSSs in multimachine
systems, and the application of PSS tuning to
multimachine systems.
The important concept of
participation factors is also
introduced, and a 14-generator system is used as an excellent example. Chapter 10 also provides an interesting correlation between the dynamic performance of a power system
following a small perturbation and that following a large
disturbance, and the chapter ends with a discussion of modal
interaction and the application of normal forms to analyze
such interactions.
Chapter 11 presents techniques for tuning supplementary damping controllers (SDCs) for FACTS devices.
In-depth coverage of SDCs associated with static VAR compensators, high-voltage dc, thyristor-controlled series capacitors, and other similar FACTS devices is provided.
Numerical examples associated with each device are
used to demonstrate the approach.
A new concept associated with the topic of modalinduced torque coefficients (MITCs) in multimachine
power systems is introduced in Chapter 12. This concept
involves calculating the shifts in rotor modes when the stabilizer gains of one or more PSSs and/or the SDC associated
with a FACTS device are incremented. The primary advantage of the proposed approach is that it not only facilitates
the study of the effect of controls on individual rotor modes
but also enables the examination of the relative effects of
controls on a set of selected modes. Detailed analytical derivations are provided.
The two concluding chapters analyze interactions between PSSs and SDCs in a multimachine power system
and methods to coordinate the control designs for PSSs
and SDCs, respectively. Chapter 13 introduces key mechanisms that lead to the interactions in terms of the MITCs
described in Chapter 12, and Chapter 14 outlines steps to
coordinate control design for improving the damping of the
associated modes.
In summary, Small-Signal Stability, Control and Dynamic Performance of Power Systems is an excellent treatise on the topic of small-signal electromechanical stability
analysis and therefore a must read for the practicing engineer and for students pursuing the study of small-signal stability in power systems.
