today public attitudes, influenced by
technological accidents and changed
risks perceptions, are different and
often there is opposition to infrastructure projects. the public is not only
concerned by electricity generation at
least possible costs and reliability of the

energy supply but also by such new aspects as environment impacts and compatibility with sustainable development
goals. the authors describe in detail the
BestGrid approach, an innovative broad
participation process to contribute to
greater public acceptance of transmission infrastructure.
Finally, the "in my View" column,
by Lisa Beuger, Patrick Buijs, JoséCarlos Fernández-Peréz, adeline Lassource, Francois regairaz, and Frank
woessink, from entso-e (european
network of transmission system operators), discusses the massive transmission infrastructure investments required in europe to attain policy goals
in the field of climate and energy. they
define, among other challenges, the
financing one, with the need to adapt
present regulatory frameworks and increase network tariffs. they argue that
the following principles should be followed: provide a fair risk-reward balance to transmission system operators,
grant long-term stability and commitment to the regulatory arrangements,
and ensure that the regulatory framework is fit for purpose. a distinction
should be made between prioritization
and financing, ensuring that projects
entailing a higher direct benefit for europe are given precedence. they close
by referring to a regulatory tool kit suggested by entso-e to help address
the funding gap.
the future looks challenging for the
power sector, with the need to identify
new approaches for the design, operation, organization, and regulation of the
transmission infrastructure. this special issue contributes to the discussion
by showing the state of the art about
these topics. we thank the authors for
their time and dedication and the articles provided, which shed light on
how we may address that uncertain future. we thank IEEE Power & Energy
