full dual fiber differential protection to guarantee
the reliability of protection relays.

There are six to seven typhoons every year in CSG. on
26 September 2005, Typhoon damrey hit the hainan province and left the area without power for a few hours. in 2015,
Typhoon Mujigea caused outages of over 1,462 overhead
lines (35 kV and above) and 117 substation blackouts (35 kV
and above).

Power System Planning
as mentioned above, many dangers exist under ac-dc parallel operation mode. in the case of a dc bipolar block,
the missing operation of SPS may cause system instability. The SPS cannot be standardized since its control
logic should be adjusted according to the actual power
system. Because of the rapid development and changes
of the CSG, the stability control system logic needs to
be updated accordingly. although much factory testing
and commissioning have been conducted for the SPS, its
pitfalls cannot be considered to be eliminated. it is not
possible to completely avoid breaker failure and protection-missing operation. So reliability is difficult to fundamentally guarantee.
as an old saying indicates, do not put all your eggs
in one basket. Separating the huge synchronous grid into
two or three subsystems may be reasonable. The scale

of each subsystem is controlled within a proper range.
in stage 1, we plan to asynchronously connect the Yunnan power grid and the main grid. in stage 2, we plan to
construct a voltage source converter (VSC) VSC-hVdc to
asynchronously connect the east part of the Guangdong
power grid and the main grid.

Asynchronous Operation of the Yunnan Grid
The Guanyinyan hVdc and Luxi back-to-back converter
station is scheduled to be constructed by 2016 to asynchronously connect the Yunnan power gird and the main grid
(Figure 5). Thus, the hVdc systems of Yunnan will no longer
be parallel with the ac system. after the Yunnan power
grid (see Fig ure 6) is operating asynchronously, the stability problem caused by dc block and commutation failure are
changed to power imbalance in each system. The frequency
problems are much easier to solve by coordinating the use
of primary frequency control, frequency modulation of dc,
intertripping of generators, and over-frequency generator
shedding. Therefore, the overall risk under asynchronous
operation mode is significantly lower than that of paralleling
operation mode.
