27 November 1897, Canadian Niagara had to have signed "contracts for
the supply of the machinery necessary for the generation of power,"
and within five months of signing
"be prepared to provide electric
power." To meet local demand for
alternating current (ac), Canadian
Niagara installed two 500-hp, threephase, 25-Hz, 2.4-kV, ten-pole Westinghouse alternators. T hese were
belt-connected to the horizontal
line shaft geared to the south turbine
shaft (see Figure 10). The coupling
between the two line shafts was disconnected. Distribution to the local
users of power was made by overhead circuits.

In 1898 following completion of the
Upper Steel Arch Bridge, a 2.2-kV,
three-conductor cable with an approximate capacity of 1,000 hp was
installed from the Niagara Falls
Power Company (NFPC) powerhouse
in New York across the bridge to the
railway powerhouse (see Figure 11)
to supplement the Canadian Niagara
