several occasions, they could not be
reproduced on the analog dc simulator
at IReQ. The simulator's high level of
damping and losses were thought to inhibit the replication of core saturation instability.
Woodford modeled bipoles 1 and 2
of the nelson River HVdc transmission
using his new emT program, based on
dc control and protection system data
supplied by Dr. mohamed Rashwan,
the dc engineer at Dorsey Station. using recordings from known disturbances, the simulation was tested and found
to produce similar results.

shared system data and recordings of a
core saturation instability event on the
nelson River HVdc transmission system. When the system data was entered

into the simulation model on emTDC,
the fault that instigated the instability
phenomenon was simulated and the
model immediately showed the elusive
core saturation instability.
Despite this success, there was still
considerable reticence in accepting
emT as a full replacement for analog
simulation. another significant study
was undertaken involving a spurious
93-Hz sustained oscillation on bipole 2
that started when its first 500-kV valve
group was deblocked. The emT simulation could not reproduce the event.
after some time, engineers from
a working group comprised of bbC,
Siemens, and a eg (who were the
equipment suppliers of bipole 2) were
in Winnipeg, and a meeting was convened at Dorsey Station to review the
problem. The key components of the

emT simulation model were reviewed,
and everything checked out satisfactorily except the response-time constant
of the dc current transformers.
The preliminary model had assumed 10 ms, but the manufacturers
were doubtful, saying only that it was
"very fast." When the model delay was
reduced to 1 ms and the simulation was
repeated, the 93-Hz oscillation immediately appeared. This increased confidence in the simulating capability of
emT for very complex power system
models necessary for HVdc. During
the early 1980s, this was the largest dc
simulation model ever produced.
although the simulation of the 93Hz oscillation was successful, the cause
of the phenomenon was not obvious. It
took some time before Thio determined it to be a ground mode resonant
