until 2030, requiring new homes to make provisions for EV
charging, and mandating smart-charging functionality in
new EV chargers.
The switch from using petrol and diesel to electricity for
road transportation will increase demands on the power system.
In its " Future Energy Scenarios Report " from 2020,
National Grid, the United Kingdom's energy system operator,
estimates that the electricity demand for road transportation
will be approximately 80 TWh in 2050, compared to
1 TWh in 2020. The majority of this demand will be connected
to the distribution network. Distribution companies
[known as distribution network operators (DNOs) in the
United Kingdom] are working to understand this demand
and the impact it will have on their networks so that the
switch to EVs can be facilitated.
One of the United Kingdom's distribution companies,
Western Power Distribution, commissioned Electric Nation
as a part of its innovation project portfolio. It was delivered
by EA Technology, DriveElectric, Lucy GridKey, and TRL.
Figure 1 displays their license areas and the location of the
trial participants.
The idea behind smart charging is to vary the current
taken by an EV charger using an external signal, thereby
applying demand management to EV charging. The signal
could be used to reduce the charging speed during times

when the network is close to its capacity. The vehicle can
only take electricity from the grid; it cannot export power
back to the network.
Smart charging has the potential to both mitigate the negative
consequences associated with EV uptake (e.g., increases
in peak load beyond the capacity of the network) while affording
benefi ts such as providing a fl exible load to assist with the
integration of renewable generation. It could also be benefi cial
for customers by offering additional income/reduced costs
(e.g., by being paid for the provision of fl exibility services or
by ensuring that their vehicle is charged when energy prices
are low).
The Electric Nation Trial
The Electric Nation field trial took place between January
2017 and December 2018. A total of 673 drivers were
recruited by DriveElectric from across Western Power
Distribution's four license areas. All of the project participants
had a plug-in vehicle [either a plug-in hybrid
EV (PHEV), range extender, or full battery EV (BEV)]
and access to off-street parking. The participants were
incentivized to join the trial by the offer of the installation
of a free smart charger as well as the opportunity to
participate in research that would aid the adoption of EVs
in the future.
