Siemens in Erlangen, Germany, and, after approximately 25 years, moved to
50Hz Transmission in Berlin, the transmission system operator (TSO) in the
northeastern part of Germany. After enjoying a 40-year career working in the
transmission business, Wilfried retired and now serves as a consultant to TSOs.
During his business career, Wilfried worked on electrification programs in several countries in the Middle East concerning ac transmission technology. At a later
stage, he changed to HVdc transmission technology, which became his field of
expertise. Wilfried has been an active PES member for more than two decades.
Since 2005, he has been vice president on the board of the Germany Section as
well as a board member in the German PES.

plant Wynau on the River Aare in Switzerland (with five machine sets) went
into operation and reached a remarkable total output of 3,000 hp. But one

year earlier, in 1895, a real sensation
had taken place on the North American
continent with what was termed the
"first superstation of the world." The
legendary Adams plant No. 1, located
among the majestic scenery of Niagara
falls, was being completed, and its
three large Tesla generators started to
produce a total output of 15,000 hp.
Meanwhile, back in Europe, the
hydraulic potential of the rapids on
the Upper Rhine River near the Swiss
town of Rheinfelden, on the border with
Germany, had for years fascinated the
imagination of hydraulic engineers.
After a long planning period, a hydropower project was started in 1894 that
was to become unique in both size and
output. The hydraulic concept was adopted from the classical mill race that,
as a lateral channel, carries a portion of
the water flow to the energy-conversion
device. in the case of Rheinfelden, this
device was a monumental power house
