flexibility needed
challenges for future energy storage systems

IN MODERN POWER SYSTEMS, WE
are transitioning to an increasing penetration of massive low-cost wind and solar
generation, which will require indispensable system flexibility for balancing
requirements to maintain system performance. The existing actors have limited
technical capabilities to provide the needed flexibility, and new alternatives are
required. The flexibility providers are diverse and being assessed extensively, with
a clear sense of urgency.
As J. Chris Shelton indicates in
his "In My View" column, "Advanced
battery-based energy storage solutions
are increasingly getting the assignment
of 'stunt double' for the generation,
transmission, and distribution 'actors'
in electricity systems around the world.
Stunt doubles allow the show to go on
even when the primary actors are incapable of performing the work." In effect,
it is clear to the industry that energy storage, including battery based, has to be a
main part of the global solution.
Battery-based storage can deliver
significant fundamental technical and
economic benefits to various segments
in the electric power sector, including
reduced requirements for investment in
the generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure as well as reduced
system operation and balancing costs. It
is not surprising that energy storage has
long been mentioned as the "holy grail"
of energy technologies.

With these developments in mind,
we invited a group of authors worldwide
to give us an overview of storage from
different perspectives: technological,
regulatory, business, operational, system
impacts, and use ca--ses. Diverse challenges arise that need to be shared and
socialized in the electric power industry.
Our first article, by Xiaosong Hu,
Changfu Zou, Caiping Zhang, and Yang
Li, provides a thorough technological
overview of batteries and their development, revising the
roles of battery energy
storage in utility applications, describing the categories of
commercial-scale batteries, and extensively
covering their technological characteristics
and real-world applications. They start by arguing that battery energy storage is very beneficial for
stabilizing the electric grid and balancing r-enewables by fulfilling the supplydemand match in real time, especially in
densely populated urban areas where traditional energy storage techniques, like
pumped hydroelectric and compressed
air, are often infeasible.
The authors project a rapid increase
in lithium-ion battery capacity, with it
becoming the dominant battery storage
technology in the future. They emphasize that, notwithstanding significant
progress in battery chemistries and

materials, effective and dependable
battery management systems are still
necessary for condition monitoring,
charge/discharge regulation, thermal
controls, cell balancing, health prognosis, and safety protection of large-scale
battery energy storage. They conclude
by describing the main future directions of battery storage technologies.
We asked Goran Strbac, Marko
Aunedi, Ioannis Konstantelos, Roberto
Moreira, Fei Teng, Rodrigo Moreno, Danny
Pudjianto, Adriana
Laguna, and Panagiotis Papadopoulos, the
authors of the second
article, to discuss the
business model for
storage. They contend
that the present market and regulatory
barriers may prevent
the realization of the quantified system
value if an energy storage asset cannot
access the entire range of system services. The development of fully costreflective markets and effective regulatory frameworks, through establishing a
level playing field between investment in
traditional network and generation solutions against investment in energy storage, is therefore necessary to ensure that
the commercial incentives for storage
are aligned with societal benefits.
