NEW ENGLAND HAS A LONG HIStory of using distributed energy resources and electric energy storage. More
than 120 years ago, plentiful water power gave rise to microgrids, serving mills
throughout the region. First operated in
1929, the Rocky River Plant is the oldest
pumped storage plant in North America.
The region continues to integrate distributed resources and storage facilities.
Massachusetts rivals California as number one in photovoltaic resources, and
the New England region boasts almost
1,800 MW of pumped storage hydro
and the recent addition of a 16-MW battery facility.
ISO New England has a long history of accommodating distributed resources and storage in the wholesale
markets for energy, capacity, and ancillary services, such as the regulation
market. The ISO's wholesale markets
continue to evolve as the need for further improvements are recognized.
Like systems throughout the world,
the New England grid will experience
growth in storage technologies to meet
the need for flexibility, which greatly increases with the large-scale addition of
variable resources. But there is still so
much to learn!
