Legacies
Once New York City embraced MU
electrification, local usage rapidly expanded: to the Long Island Railroad in
1905, West Jersey & Seashore Railroad
and New Haven Railroad, both in 1906,
and New York Central Railroad in 1907

as part of the electrification of Grand
Central Terminal. By then, there were
more than 70 MU urban rapid transit systems around the world, employing more
than 3,000 individual MU cars. Today,
Sprague's MU system and its variations
serve as the world standard for such electric

transportation with GE and its subsidiaries the dominant suppliers (see Figure 9).
The technology has also evolved with
more use of combinations of MU motorized and passenger-only cars and often
replacement of the original pilot motors
and controllers by a contactor. a contactor
