connection of shunt reactors following a disturbance creating an overvoltage on the 735-kV network. This scheme can
also control the disconnection of reactors, which can be useful during geomagnetic storms creating voltage drop on the
transmission system. mais is a local control system that
allows the disconnection of a maximum of two shunt reactors
by substation, one at a time, and independently from one substation to another. The tripping of shunt reactors makes it possible to preserve the regulation range of the sVcs, therefore
facilitating the voltage control. For the worst-case scenario,
an undervoltage automatic load shedding scheme is also in
place to maintain 735-kV voltage levels in the montreal area.

Temperature-Rise Test of Power Transformers
Temperature-rise tests of power transformers in which dc circulates were carried out at the hydro-Quebec research institute
laboratories in 1995. during these tests, performed in collaboration with abb, a current equivalent to 75 continuous amps
on the high side circulated in two autotransformers during a
one-hour period. heat rise on the inside of these transformers
was monitored by thermocouples placed specifically at the locations expected to overheat. Tests on the 700-300-kV, 550-mVa
and 735-230-kV, 370-mVa transformers, found in the greatest numbers on the transmission system, revealed that even if
significant heating occurs, the maximum values reached remain
