the power plant still had adequate electrical capacity but
was limited by its steam capacity. Accordingly, a new boiler house was built beneath a courtyard adjacent to the east
Building. the three existing Babcock & Wilcox boilers were
reset in this new location and supplemented by two new Babcock & Wilcox boilers. the original smokestack was rebuilt,
in circular cross section, to a height of 165 ft (50.3 m). the
original boiler house then became a coal bunker.
during 1927-1929, an Auditorium Building and an engineering Complex were constructed on campus. At this time,
the first alternating current (ac) service was installed with
220-V, three-phase power being utilized in the new engineering laboratories.
the dc power plant remained in use, however. In 1900, a
"breakdown service" had been installed in conjunction with the
installation of the new switchboard, consisting of a three-wire,
115/230-V service from the edison electric Company dc grid.
this was utilized late at night or on weekends when it was not
desirable to operate the power plant.
In 1929, the edison electric Company analyzed the power
plant operation and concluded that it was still economical, but
that the engine-generators were "nearing the end of their useful
life." In 1941, the three 1896 boilers were replaced by two new
stoker-fed boilers. By 1948, the Ge turbine-generator unit was in
need of major repairs. Instead, it was retired, but not removed,
and replaced in function by the installation of three World War II
surplus diesel-generator units totaling 220 kW in capacity (one
100-kW and two 60-kW units).
during the 1950s, the gradual conversion of campus buildings to ac power was begun. By 1977, the only dc loads consisted of two elevators and some miscellaneous lighting, including
the lighting within the power plant itself.
