Figure 1 shows the engine room
floor from the encircling balcony. the
balcony is at street level, and the operating floor is one level below. the
chief engineer's office is seen off the
far (east) end of the balcony. the main
switchboard and the three generators,
along with the three engine flywheels,
are evident in the center of the image
(which is actually a postcard photo).
Figure 2 shows the three enginegenerator units consisting of Ames steam
engines driving Ge 75-kW, 115-V dc
generators, for which the patent dates
are 1896. Note the oil can on a stand in
the left foreground.
Figure 3 is a close-up view of one
of the Ge generators. the nameplates
identify these as being "continuous
current" generators, which is the term
that was used for dc into the early 20th
century. It actually was a much better
descriptive term than direct current.

Figure 4 is a portion of the marble
switchboard. the panel having two
round meters side by side originally
was used to control the turbine-generator unit, and the three panels to the
right, with one meter each, are for the
three engine-generator units. the panel to the left, with three large meters in
a vertical arrangement, originally controlled the 100-kW diesel-generator
unit. however, that function was transferred to the two meter panel to its right
when the turbine-generator was retired.
At a later date, Milster (who is a
masterful collector of vintage electrical devices) installed the three
large meters to monitor the dc bus
voltage, the total ampere load on the
lighting circuits, and the total ampere load on the motor circuits. he
had acquired these meters from a
retired power plant at Columbia University in Manhattan.
