Figure 9 shows one of two thomson
Recording Wattmeters mounted on the
switchboard. this device was invented
in 1889 by Prof. elihu thomson of the
thomson-houston Company in Lynn,
Massachusetts. In 1892, that company

was merged with the edison General
electric Company to form the General
electric Company, commonly known
as Ge. It was the first successful mechanical form of watt-hour meter.
Prior to the development of the
thomson recording wattmeter, thomas
edison had been using a chemical type

tripped under load, a lengthy, potentially destructive electrical arc would
be formed. Below the breakers is an
ammeter and, below that, the control for
a field rheostat to regulate the generator voltage. to the left is a four-contact
voltmeter receptacle into which a special plug would be inserted to connect
that generator to a common voltmeter
on the switchboard.
At the bottom is a three-pole main
knife switch. the third pole was for
an "equalizer" connection that joined
together a point between the positive
commutator brushes of the generators
and their series-connected (compound)
field windings. Such a connection enabled compound-wound generators to
properly divide the load when operating in parallel. Further fine control of
the load division would then be accomplished by adjusting the field rheostats
connected in the main shunt fields of
the generators.
In Figure 6, there is the switchboard lighting feeder panels (which
are lighter in color) that were added at a later date as more campus
buildings were constructed. Figure 7
is the turbine-generator unit at center
and the 100-kW World War II vintage
diesel-generator behind it (and the oil
can again in the foreground, beside one
of the engine-generators). Figure 8 is
