In 1905, the first GE steam turbine
unit was installed (in lieu of more engines) in Waterside I. This was a 5,000-kW
vertical turbine-generator and was very
similar to the first such turbine installed
by GE at the Fiske Street Station of
the Commonwealth Edison Company in

Chicago. That unit remained in operation for just six years because, by 1909,
GE was able to install a turbine unit of
12,000-kW capacity in the same space.
The original turbine unit was returned
to the Schenectady plant and put on
display outside of Building 60 where
it had been built. This monument was
christened Titan and remained there
for decades. It still exists today but has
been moved to another location in what
now remains of the once-mighty manufacturing plant.
Two similar turbine units were installed in Waterside I shortly after 1905
(see Figure 3), and, by 1909, two 10,000-kW
units were also installed. In 1911, a major rebuilding of the Waterside I engine
room took place, which included the reconstruction of the elevated control room
(see Figure 4). At this time, four of the
original engines were removed and replaced by three 20,000-kW turbine units.
By 1923, the remaining seven engines
had been scrapped and replaced by the
first of two 35,000-kW horizontal turbine-generator units.
Meanwhile, Waterside II had been
placed into operation in 1906 with 96
650-hp boilers and ten turbine-generator
units (eight vertical units and two horizontal units). No engine-driven generators were ever installed in Waterside II.
A 1909 Electrical World article mentioned the use of an interesting procedure in Waterside I after the first
