turbine units (two in Waterside I and three
in Waterside II) were generating 60-Hz,
rather than 25-Hz, power. Some additional slate panels on the board represented
high-voltage feeders supplying power directly to large industrial and commercial
customers. Instrument panels at each end
of the board contained voltmeters, frequency indicators, indicating wattmeters,
and totalizing wattmeters for both the
25- and 60-Hz power systems. At the very
top of the board, four indicating wattmeters showed the total loads on both the
Waterside I and Waterside II stations.
The upper portion of the board was
devoted to all of the various generating
units supplying power to the system,
not only those at Waterside but generators located in other stations owned by
or operated by New York Edison. One
of these stations, called Kingsbridge,

was located in upper Manhattan for the
supply of power to the Third Avenue
Railroad operation. The station's name
was derived from a very early footbridge over Spuyten Duyvil Creek that
was the first connection between Manhattan island and the mainland, the
Bronx, to the north. The Kingsbridge
Station had been leased by New York
Edison in 1912 and was connected to
Waterside via four tie feeders. The station was derelict by the 1940s but was
still standing in 1964. It was subsequently demolished, and the site was used for
a New York City bus garage.
Another station was Sherman Creek
(now demolished), which stood alongside the Harlem River in upper Manhattan. Originally, it was referred to as
201st Street due to its location in the
Manhattan street grid. This generating

station had been built in 1913 by the
United Electric Light & Power Company (UEL&P), a competitor of New York
Edison in the supply of 60-Hz power.
However, since some 60 Hz was generated at Waterside, the two systems had
been interconnected, and, eventually, the
two companies merged.
In 1922, UEL&P built a mammoth
generating station in the Bronx called
Hell Gate. Slate panels representing its
generators were added in unused space
at the top of the system operator's board
at Waterside. The Hell Gate Station
was demolished in the early 1980s.
Another railroad power house was
taken over by New York Edison in 1921.
This was the Jersey City (New Jersey)
generating station for the Hudson and
Manhattan Railroad (originally called
the Hudson Tubes and today operating
