no known method by which a short
circuit on a transmission line of the
capacity of that at Niagara Falls could
be opened without causing damage to
the circuit breaker. Fuses were tried in
the Adams Plant, but the interrupting
duty was too severe.
T hey were removed
because they exploded
when clearing a fault
and caused more trouble than they prevented. The solution was
to disconnect the alternator's field, shutting
down the entire section
of bus. This would not
prove to be a long-term
solution, however.
Having been accustomed to dealing with
the relatively small
level of short circuits in the dc Edison systems, no one had anticipated the magnitude of faults possible
on ac systems. There were isolating
switches used to connect the generators to the bus, but these were never
intended to interrupt any level of fault

current. As most of the short circuits
were on the transmission line, the local distribution system was fed from a
section separated from the transmission
circuits. Eventually, this untenable situation would lead to the development
of the oil circuit breake r. B u t t h a t w o u l d
take a number of years
and was dependent on
gaining a better understanding of short
circuit phenomena.
The conductors used
for local distribution
were routed through a
concrete tunnel 2,000 ft
in length. Iron brackets were mounted
on the walls of the tunnel; each bracket carried four, lead-covered,
single-conductor copper cables (see Figure 3). This tunnel ended in a manhole
near the plants of the Pittsburgh Reduction and Carborundum companies.
The cables for these two plants left the
tunnel and ran on wooden poles to the
customers' premises. But in the same
